I saw a topic on a Skyrim variant a while back...
I'm quite a big fan of the Elder Scrolls games, and the one I would say is best for a variant would be Morrowind (An online map: http://www.uesp.net/maps/mwmap/mwmap.shtml). I would like to develop such a variant, and am currenctly editing a map to make it blank before I start putting in territories, but one thing I need to ask beforehand is would there be copyright issues with this? I was wondering if that was the reason that the Skyrim map was never taken very far...

Yes. Because I really fear possible copyright issues I won't run maps based on a well knows IP (ESP. If it's a software IP).
Maybe someone else could set up a server just for this kind of maps, but I won't do this.

Would it be possible to get their permission in some way? I know it's a long shot, but people on YouTube can upload videos to do with this sort of stuff provided it's got a disclaimer on it...

I have got a reply from the Bethesda representative on the official Elder Scrolls forum:

I need to email the project to him to confirm whether it's legal, but first I would like to know if you (Sleepcap) actually will allow this variant on. Obviously, it doesn't matter what Bethesda says if you don't want it on the server.

If it's ok from the legal department I'll host this.

Okay, I've sent him an email with details of what I intend to do. Hopefully he'll reply shortly - I'll post here when he does.

On another note, I am using the official map and blanking it out using the land colour from classic before putting in borders, but I am using paint and whenever I reopen it the edges of the land become blurred. Is there any way to stop this?

You can't do variant-coding using the windows edit.
It lacks many features you absolutely need...
You can try the tips from our wiki (http://www.vdiplomacy.com/wiki/index.php?title=Variants).

I get the feeling you might be saving your file as a jpeg instead of a png. When you save as a jpeg all the colours get blurred for some reason.

Ah, thank you! I didn't know you had to save it as PNG.

Okay, I've got the okay from their legal department so I guess this can go ahead. I can take a screenshot of it if needs be, but I'd prefer not as it's an email so I'm not sure how I'd erase my email address from the screenshot without tampering with it (as I guess this would make the evidence invalid).

I'm having quite a busy time at the moment, so it might take quite a bit of time until I can turn this idea into reality, but at least this first step has been successful.
