Point farming, in my book, refers to the process of playing and choosing games to maximise points rather than for the sake of playing good, in-the-spirit diplomacy.

It is possible under almost any system, because of 2 things:

1. Problems with the reward system (as is being discussed here)
2. Problems with the rating system (whereby choosing certain types of opponent helps)

2. choosing weak opponents.

I took this to mean the situation where players join many low ranked games to buff up their rank by quantity rather than quality of games, a situation that I abhor. The relative buy-in solves this.

Problem is, of course, that you can go too far, so choosing strong opponents has that effect. Basically, choice of opponent should make no difference whatsoever.

That's not exactly true.
The greater the challenge the greater the reward.
If your games pose no challenge they should give no reward.
If you are playing like-ranked players the reward should be proportionate, regardless of your rank.

I'm not sure. Firstly, there is always a challenge, you can never enter a game you're certain to win, and as such you're always taking a risk. If I joined a game with 6 new players I would suggest the odds are about 10% I win it, if only due to tall poppy syndrome. Then, if I did win, I have managed to achieve a much better result than predicted, and should be rewarded. I have to say that, once finished, the GhostRating system does seem to cover almost all the difficulties found in the points system.
Going back to the original issue, adding a hybrid is something I suggested directly to Kestas quite some time ago. However, as he pointed out, the difference between this and PPSC is rarely very great, and this is just another thing that could confuse players.

My understanding of the Elo system is that you get higher points for beating higher ranked players. That seems to address your problem avinoam atleast partially.

But yes, I do like to stay on topic. I realised the proposal was a bit complicated when I first put it forward, but I wanted to put the best proposal first. The easy proposal is to make it literally a hybrid. Half and half. WTH. The Winner takes half, the other half is PPSC. Thus the winner should get 75% of the points of a game. This is pretty easy to understand in my book.

avinaom, what I am saying is that you could have, with any game, a situation where you pay too little or too much. Ghost-rating's whole purpose is basically to get it so that the gain:risk is right. This will manifest itself in people's ratings being unaffected by who they play, but affected only by how well they play.

Ghost
How well you play is closely tied in with who you play against.

What do you mean by that? Your skill is your skill, regardless of who you play against.

figle, in the 75% of the games that are won in PPSC, this would mean that the winner got 76.5% of the pot rather than 53% of the pot. That surely is a massive difference?
